FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
Sausalito, CA -- West Coast artist Kimberly Rowe, whose art has been compared to Diebenkorn and Serra, will be debuting her latest work, Headlands Corner Splash Piece at her upcoming open studio at the Headlands Center for the Arts (HCA) on Sunday, April 22.
Her open studio will be part of the larger Spring Open House at the HCA that connects visitors to the working practice of artists and fosters casual conversations about their creative process. Scheduled in conjunction with Headlands' three Artists in Residence seasons, Open House features curated happenings and events scheduled throughout the day including readings, performances, screenings and guided walks (click HERE for more event information).
Kimberly Rowe is a California-based artist whose work is a hybrid of delicate handiwork and tough construction, and whose process frequently includes crawling on top of canvas or panel, pressing fabric into puddles of paint or sanding down areas to reveal earlier layers, melding immediate marks with patina from the past. Her current work is informed by worn walls, rickety fences, well-loved quilts and by watching the rhythm of the waves at Rodeo Beach, which she frequently visits to ground herself before working in her studio.
"I am inspired by the relentless and dynamic cadence of the ocean waves and the light and colors that can spontaneously change at any moment," the artist describes. "Having recently seen the Richard Serra exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, I was reminded of how deeply connected I am to his way of allowing the physical properties of his materials to reveal his intentions. While it only loosely references his Corner Splash piece, in this work I am attempting to convey a sense of rhythm, repetition and impermanence."
This work, which has been created on two 225 x 72 in. lengths of denim, flows from one end of her studio across the floor (shown below) and is made from acrylic paint, fabric and other mostly blue and grey-hued mediums, embodying the physical and emotional influences of this space. Always happy to discuss her work, Kimberly plans to be in her studio during the entire Open House and is also available for private viewings upon request. |
